Physics
This is a collection of resources and things for anyone interested in looking into more physics as an A-Level Student.
British Physics Olympiad
The British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) runs a range of competitions for school and gap-year students.
Their main competition, the BPhO itself, is aimed at students in Years 12–13. It has three rounds of increasing difficulty, culminating in a training camp for 14 students. From this camp, the UK team is selected for the International Physics Olympiad (and sometimes the European Physics Olympiad). An interactive database of Round 1 questions is available, and all past papers can be downloaded from their website. Students hoping to reach the camp are encouraged to read Upgrade Your Physics.
They also run the British Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad (BAAO). This has two rounds, leading to a final camp of 14 from which the UK team for the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics is chosen. Any student achieving a Top Gold in BPhO Round 1 is automatically invited to sit BAAO Round 2. The syllabus is available online.
Finally, the BPhO offers a 10-week computational challenge, supported by a lecture series, which introduces students to problem solving through programming and simulation. They also do some Year-12 only exams during the year.
Oxford Quantum Club
The Oxford Quantum Club is an online course in quantum physics for students in Years 12 and 13. It runs throughout the academic year, with weekly tutorials and set work delivered online.
Applicants are expected to be studying A-level Physics, to have strong mathematical skills, and to complete an entrance test on complex numbers as part of the application process. The deadline for applications is 12 October.
